Fill the Carton

Children will practice counting and number recognition using numbers 1 thru 12,
an egg carton, and small manipulatives (pebbles).

Obtain the Materials

• Egg cartons.  Label the dips in the carton 1 – 12
• 78 small manipulatives, (pebbles, small counters)
• 2 dice
• The book, Ten Apples on Top by Dr. Suess

Note: Small parts create a choking hazard for children. Make sure that all materials you choose to use for an activity or lesson with children meet safety requirements. Small parts are not appropriate for children who are 5 years of age or younger.

Introduce the Activity

1. Read the book Ten Apples on Top by Dr. Suess. Ask the children to count the apples on top of the animal’s head.
2. Explain that the children are going to play a game in pairs. The object of the game is to “Fill the Carton” by rolling dice and then filling the carton with the corresponding number of pebbles.

Engage the Children

1. Explain the game board (egg carton) and how to use the dice.  Explain that are numbers at the bottom of each egg dip and those are the numbers that they are going to match up with the number on the dice.
2. Model how to play the game.  Let the children see you roll the dice. Say:“I have rolled an 8. What should I do?” “Put 8 pebbles in the dip that says 8” “Yes, that’s correct. Now it’s Sally’s turn.”  The object of the game is to “Fill the Carton”
3. Explain that if a player rolls a number that is already completed, like an 8, than that player rolls again.  After 3 tries, the other player gets a turn.

• Make up a counting worksheet to accompany the game.  The sheet can include an adding component – adding numbers from 1 through 12.  The sheet could also be a matching sheet, matching the numerical number with the written number with the pictorial representation of that number.

Encourage Vocabulary

• Count  To identify the amount of something by number (e.g., "How many blocks do you have? 1-2-3!" Point to each object while saying 1-2-3.)
• Corresponding – Similar in function and form (e.g., "The dice says 8. Place the corresponding number of pebbles into the egg carton.")

Supporting Children at Different Levels

Toddlers   Pre-K

Toddlers may:

• Not yet count to 10 in sequential order and not have mastered one-to-one correspondence with numbers 1-10.

Pre-K Children may:

• Easily work with numbers 1 – 12.

Home child care providers may:

• Cut the egg carton in half and only use 6 of the dips, 1 die and 21 pebbles.

Home child care providers may:

• Make up a counting worksheet to accompany the game.  The sheet can include an adding component – adding numbers 1 – 12.  The sheet could also be a matching sheet, matching the numerical number with the written number with the pictorial representation of that number.

Music and Movement

Outdoor Connections

• Re-enact the book, Ten Apples on Top using stackable pails and having the kids wear the pails on their head. Assign children to play the roles of the various animals and the remaining children can be the chorus.  Read the story aloud and have the children stack the pails on their heads as the remaining children count aloud.
