Teaching Time

by Jennifer Asimow

On Monday we looked at a really great classroom tool that helps children keep track of time. That is a very different idea than telling time. It takes children a long time to be able to look at a traditional clock face and tell the time. They need to be able to count to 60, count by 5s, multiple by 5s, recognize the different lengths of the minute hands and the hour hands, recognize the difference between seconds, minutes, and hours. This is why, telling time is not a preschool standard.

However, knowing that clocks measure time is a preschool skill. This article describes ways in which we can support children as they develop early time-telling skills. Check it out.
