How Cold is Cold?

by Jennifer Asimow

Did you know that this is the coldest snap Chicago has seen in 2 years? Last year, I never even broke out my real winter coat, the one that goes down to the ground and looks like a giant sleeping bag. I originally bought that coat over 14 years ago when I was a kindergarten teacher and we stood outside on the playground every day. That was the best money I ever spent.

Clearly, 2 degrees is too cold for outdoor play and young children need to be super protected from this kind of cold. However, they still need a lot of gross motor play, so be sure to push the furniture aside and get the kids moving.

Stay warm and stay safe. Check your neighbors, especially the elderly, to ensure that they have heat and groceries. Limit exposure to the elements by covering up and wearing layers.
